The anatomy of a coffered ceiling
A coffered ceiling is a grid of beams dividing the ceiling into recessed panels. What separates convincing work from applied decoration is depth and proportion: the beams have to project far enough to cast a real shadow line, the grid has to relate to the room’s dimensions rather than be squeezed into it, and the mouldings inside each coffer are built up from several profiles rather than run as one.
Ceiling height governs what is possible. A grid consumes vertical space, so a standard-height room needs a shallower, carefully proportioned treatment while a tall room can carry serious depth. That assessment happens on site, because it cannot be judged from a floor plan.

Coffered Ceilings — questions, answered
- Is my ceiling tall enough for a coffered ceiling?
- Often yes, with the design adjusted to suit. A grid takes vertical space, so lower ceilings call for a shallower profile and a coarser grid — a judgement made on site rather than from drawings.
- Painted or stained?
- Painted coffers read lighter and more architectural and tend to suit traditional and transitional rooms; stained wood reads warmer and heavier and belongs in libraries, studies, and mountain interiors. The room, its light, and the cabinetry below it decide.
- Can lighting be built into the ceiling?
- Yes, and it is far better planned into the grid than added afterwards, so fixture positions are coordinated with the beam layout and nothing lands awkwardly inside a coffer. Electrical work itself is the appropriate trade’s, sequenced with the millwork.
