The work that ties a house together
This is everything cabinet-grade that is not a kitchen or a bath: bookcases and built-ins, fireplace surrounds, window seats, wall panelling and wainscot, mudroom benches, home offices, and the occasional one-off furniture piece. It is the joinery that makes rooms feel built rather than furnished.
Older houses are where it earns its keep, because nothing in them is square. Walls bow, floors slope, and ceilings run out of level over a long wall — so built-ins are scribed to the room as it actually is, with panels and fillers absorbing the discrepancy so the finished piece reads plumb even when the wall behind it is not.
Matching existing millwork is the other half of the job. Profile depths, panel proportions, and the way a base meets a casing all have to answer to what is already in the house, or new work announces itself permanently as new.
Custom Woodworking — questions, answered
- My walls are not square. Is that a problem?
- It is the normal condition for any house with some age, and building to order answers it by design: the room is measured as it actually is and the piece is scribed to fit, so the result reads straight even where the wall is not.
- Can you match the trim and millwork already in the house?
- Usually yes — profiles can be reproduced so new built-ins sit inside the existing language of the house rather than beside it. Photographs of the existing casing and base are the quickest starting point.
- Do you build freestanding furniture as well as built-ins?
- One-off pieces are part of the work — the same construction and finishing, simply not attached to a wall. Whether a piece is better built in or freestanding is worth deciding at design rather than after.
